BEAUTY & BRAINS*

Sunday, April 27, 2008

If there is one thing I know about this place I now call home, Atlanta...it is that EVERY WOMEN THINKS SHES A SUPERMODEL. Whether she is on a promo team, or is half naked on a party flyer you might find blowing across the promanade...
A Supermodel is defined as a highly paid elite fashion model, who USUALLY has a worldwide reputation & often has a background in couture or commercial modeling. Now, nowhere is that sentence does it say anything about having a big ass, or being a video girl. Why not? Because those women are not models. I am constantly getting offers to be a model and/or dancer. Its all just a matter of how they decide to word it to make it sound most appealing in my favor. As I am growing and opening my eyes to what is around me, I am being able to see that these "models" as they call themselves are just women using their body is a negative way to make money. Nowwww, I am in no way knocking anyones hustle...By all means, do your thing but...I wonder, does this profession pay the bills,? All of the bills? Do they respect themselves? But mainly, why are they doing this there is so much MORE money to be made elsewhere. When I first got down here this industry was constantly thrown in my face. To me it looked like it would be so easy to be a model in Atlanta, all I had to do was make sure that I didnt have to expose my body in a negative way. I am not from the south. I don't have assets of Buffie the Bodie or any other female you might find on the cover of Smooth or King Magazine.
Growing up I learned that your name & image is all you have in this world. All women don't need to get into this "line of work." These models limit themselves to what they can do when they get involved in this industry. If your entire income is not coming from your modeling, then it can not be considered a job to me.
The reason that I think that this industry looks to appealing to so many people is because when you are looking in, it is lavish and exciting. But you don't have to walk around as a "promo girl" be on the inside. This is a male dominated industry, so women automatically are alright with the back burner position. These "models" are looked at as brainless women who will do anything to get where they want go be. But then, you will find the few attractive ladies that are in the backround making major moves and wearing their clothes the whole time. Can you belive that?! These women that are event planners, stylists, publists, managers and the list goes on! These women are respected by men and are independent. They worked hard to get where they are and deserve to get the credit they deserve. Just because you have a pretty face and a coke bottle shaped body doesn't mean that becoming a "model" is all you have to hope for. I hope that one day women can step up and be on top with the men. Because, that beauty will fade away, but the brains are timeless.
